Information Technology

Well for beginners, “de-duplication” simply means NOT storing multiple copies of data. Say you have excel sheet and you mail it to your colleagues. You would have 10 copies of the same data. The story does’nt end here, your file server is backed up everyday as is your mail server. So you backup 11 copies of the excel sheet.

De-duplication means storing as many few copies as possible.

While some companies have solutions to de-duplicate data as it is backed up and some companies have solutions to de-duplicate data after it has been backed up. And now we await something that helps us de-duplicate data at the source itself.  Not that such technology is not available, but the fact that we have’nt actualy deployed and acted on it. Today my Veritas command central reports duplicate files across my storage  boxes, if I were to spend de-duplicating them, you would imagine whether I would I have time to spend with my family. I could think of the FAN {File Area Network} from Brocade, the tapestry solution, also some kind of de-duplication technology.

To summarize, I would support de-duplication at source, simply because I’m saving more resources. De-duplication on target would be easy to manage and faster solution.

 hacking

Hackers briefly overwhelmed at least three of the 13 computers that help manage global computer traffic Tuesday in one of the most significant attacks against the Internet since 2002.

Experts said the unusually powerful attacks lasted as long as 12 hours but passed largely unnoticed by most computer users, a testament to the resiliency of the Internet. Behind the scenes, computer scientists worldwide raced to cope with enormous volumes of data that threatened to saturate some of the Internet’s most vital pipelines.

The motive for the attacks was unclear, said Duane Wessels, a researcher at the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis at the San Diego Supercomputing Center. “Maybe to show off or just be disruptive; it doesn’t seem to be extortion or anything like that,” Wessels said. (more…)

Since we are talking a lot about the Apple’s Phone (i dont know what they are goona launch it finally as) but here a good video on youtube that i found while checking on the phone.

I wish the unveiling of Iphone for Apple would have been a smooth ride.

No sooner has Apple Computer unveiled its “iPhone” at the ongoing MacWorld 2007, Cisco has announced filing a lawsuit against Apple in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

The suit seeks to prevent Apple from infringing upon and deliberately copying and using Cisco’s registered ‘iPhone’ trademark.

San Jose-based Cisco, the world’s largest network-equipment maker, has owned the trademark on the name “iPhone” since 2000, when it acquired InfoGear Technology Corp., which originally registered the name. The ‘iPhone’ trademark was obtained by Cisco in 2000, after completing acquiring Infogear, which till then owned the trademark and sold products under that name.

iPhone another great phone by Apple and since we are on a writing spree about phone NetGear with Skype and LinkSys with Yahoo Messenger Voice.

iPhone combines three products — a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching — into one small and lightweight handheld device. iPhone also introduces an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software, letting you control everything with just your fingers. So it ushers in an era of software power and sophistication never before seen in a mobile device, completely redefining what you can do on a mobile phone.

Great Buttons having the MAC look and feel, i would definately wanna have.

I got the inspiration to write this article from Nitin’s recent post on Yahoo messenger cordless phone. Those of you who missed out catching up on this excellent article, here’s the link

Skype has launched a similar product in the wireless domain. With looks of a mobile phone it’s sure to make heads turn.

The phone has been launched by netgear and is available in the market for as low as USD 200.

With additional functionality of skype calling card, you can make international calls to your friends mobile too.

The Problem is many BlueTooth enabled phones is a security flaw in the BlueTooth stack. this can lead to the attacker gaining access to Phone Book, Messages and even make calls from the phone.

I hit on a nice Video on youtube showing a Proof of concept (PoC) of it. Have a look and the best bet is disable bluetooth when not needed.

If you cannot see the video below, click here to view it on the youtube site.

Was just going to the Juniper Website to download JunOS, happened to see a kewl image on the frontpage.

Posting it here too, depicts good of current security management is many companies.

Catching up on the internet news :: what i call the Friday Night thing, found some interesting news on Seagate disk drives, till now Seagate had a 750 G-byte drive which is not bringing out a new 1 TB drive, below is the extract from Yahoo News

I need to buy and disk and then worry bout gathering data which i can store there, but all the versions of Knoppix and WHoppix Live CD ISO’s that i have :D

Seagate Technology is planning to begin shipping a hard-disk drive with a 1T-byte storage capacity sometime during the first half of 2007

The drive, which will offer one-third more space than Seagate’s current highest-capacity drive, is expected to ship to major customers like system and PC vendors during that time-frame, Seagate said.

The switch to a new data recording technology called perpendicular recording is the key to enabling some big jumps in storage capacity on hard-disk drives.

Google's tip :: Blogger

Google “Tips,” where Google promoted certain of their own products over organic search results, have been quietly pulled down or may be the service is down but i don’t see it.

Until recently, Google searches for Calendar, Blogging, Photo Sharing and others returned “tips” above normal search results suggesting users try Google Calendar, Blogger and Picasa, respectively.

Firefox co-founder Blake Ross criticized the change in a widely read blog post, and the rest of, the world generally too followed the suit.

I did see a few appreciating/finding it interesting {i pulled the image from him} Kiruba

I really don’t think Google’s strategy was bad, what do you guys think.
