Is your life heading in the right direction? If not, what can you do about it?

When it comes to the big decisions in life we can become our own worst enemy because we tend to imagine the choice is between can and can’t when it is actually between will and won’t.

Conjure up catastrophic fantasies about what could go wrong rather than make a realistic assessment of what is likely to happen.

Get sucked into dealing with things that need to be done now rather than getting everything in place to ensure a bright future.

All of which means that when we want to start a new chapter, we need to think afresh. 5 ways to decide whether to start a new chapter.

1. Recognise that anything you do is within your control. Whether you decide to start a new business or go to live in Brazil, the choice is yours.

2. Give yourself time to reflect on what could be as well as what is. Let these thoughts gestate for a while - starting a new chapter is a big decision and there is no need to rush

3. Look back at when you’ve been happiest and when you’ve been most successful. What can you glean from past joys to guide your future plans?

4. Ask for advice from friends and people you respect but remember that they will each have their own prejudices

5. Consider how your current situation is likely to change even if you don’t make any bold moves. This is a fairer comparison with what a new chapter might bring.
